Down to Earth™ Granular Root Zone Beneficial Organisms — 2oz

Down to Earth™ Granular Root Zone is a professional-grade, ultra-concentrated biological soil amendment formulated to establish a complete beneficial organism ecosystem in the root zone at planting. The blend combines mycorrhizal fungi, Trichoderma species, and a diverse mix of beneficial bacterial strains into a granular format that can be applied directly to transplant holes, seedling root balls, or incorporated into growing media to immediately inoculate the root zone with the organisms that build long-term soil health and plant performance.

Mycorrhizal fungi extend the plant root system by orders of magnitude — forming hyphal networks that dramatically expand the volume of soil explored for water and nutrients, improving plant access to phosphorus, micronutrients, and water in ways that root tissue alone cannot match. Trichoderma species colonize the root zone and growing media, competing with and suppressing soil-borne pathogens while simultaneously producing plant growth-stimulating compounds. The bacterial consortium further diversifies the rhizosphere biology, improving nutrient cycling, soil aggregate formation, and the sustained organic matter decomposition that builds growing medium structure over successive production cycles. OMRI Listed® for certified organic production programs.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Mycorrhizal Fungi — Colonize plant roots to form hyphal networks that dramatically extend the root zone's effective surface area, improving phosphorus, micronutrient, and water uptake.
  • Trichoderma Species — Colonize the rhizosphere and growing media to suppress soil-borne pathogens while producing plant growth-promoting metabolites that support root development and stress tolerance.
  • Diverse Beneficial Bacteria — Multi-species bacterial consortium improves nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and soil aggregate formation for long-term growing medium health improvement.
  • Ultra-Concentrated Professional Formula — High organism count per gram provides effective inoculation with a small application volume — the 2oz size treats multiple transplant sites or seedling flats.
  • Improves Soil Structure — Biological activity builds aggregates and organic matter that improve aeration, water retention, and root penetration in compacted or depleted growing media.
  • OMRI Listed® — Approved for certified organic production programs; compatible with organic fertility and IPM protocols.

Who Should Use This

Organic growers, greenhouse transplant producers, and any grower prioritizing long-term root zone biology and soil health benefit from establishing the Granular Root Zone organism community at planting. It is particularly valuable during transplanting — when the disruption of root systems creates an ideal opportunity for mycorrhizal and bacterial colonization — and in growing media that has been steam-sterilized or fumigated, where native beneficial populations have been eliminated and need to be re-established.

Compatibility

Apply directly to transplant holes or seed furrows, or incorporate into potting mix at the recommended rate. Avoid direct contact with high-concentration synthetic fertilizers or fungicide drenches at application time, which can harm beneficial organisms. For best results, apply before or during transplanting when roots are actively growing. OMRI Listed® for certified organic production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Granular Root Zone in hydroponic systems?
The product is formulated for soil and soilless growing media where mycorrhizal and bacterial colonization can establish around root tissue. In recirculating hydroponic systems with no growing media, colonization opportunity is limited. Best results occur in soil, coco, rockwool, and other media-based systems.

How long do the organisms remain viable after application?
Once applied to moist growing media with actively growing roots, the organisms begin colonizing within days. Organisms in the dry product remain viable as long as the package is stored sealed in cool, dry conditions per the label storage instructions.

Can I use this alongside chemical fungicides?
Fungicide applications — particularly soil drenches and systemic fungicides — can significantly reduce beneficial fungi and bacteria populations. Apply Granular Root Zone when fungicide use is not planned for at least several days before or after inoculation to protect the establishing organism communities.

Is the 2oz size sufficient for commercial production?
At professional-grade concentration, the 2oz size is effective for treating numerous transplant sites or seedling flats. For larger commercial planting operations, Down to Earth offers larger sizes. Consult the label for recommended application rates per planting hole or per cubic foot of growing media.
