On-the-Spot Root Zone pH Without Slurry Tests, Tapered Tip

Slurry tests and pour-throughs take time, so substrate pH often goes unchecked until plants show a problem. The Bluelab Soil pH Pen measures pH directly in the growing medium, giving a reading at the root zone in moments. Its tapered-tip probe, inspired by the Bluelab Soil pH Probe, makes penetration easier and improves contact with the substrate.

It suits gardeners checking beds and containers and commercial growers spot-checking pots, beds and slabs. The pen also reads nutrient solution, so one tool covers both feed and root zone.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Direct substrate measurement — reads pH in soil, coco, potting mix, rockwool and other media, plus solution.
  • Tapered-tip probe — fibre-reinforced polycarbonate body designed for easier penetration and flex resistance.
  • KCl-filled storage cap and Keep Plug — keeps the sensor hydrated between uses and seals the cap to help prevent spills.
  • ATC and hold function — temperature-compensated readings with a hold button and backlit LCD.

Who Should Use the Bluelab Soil pH Pen

Growers using soil, coco or other substrates who want fast root zone pH checks without lab tests or slurries. It also fits hydroponic growers who want one pen for both medium and solution.

About Bluelab Soil pH Pen

The Bluelab Soil pH Pen measures pH 0.0–14.0 with ±0.1 accuracy at 25°C / 77°F and runs on 1x AAA battery (included). It ships with pH 7.0, pH 4.0 and KCl storage sachets and a KCl-Keep Plug, and carries a 1-year limited warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I measure pH in dry soil?
pH meters need moisture to read accurately. If the soil is dry, add a small amount of distilled or deionized water, let it soak in, then measure. This applies to all direct-contact soil pH tools.
Why measure pH at the root zone instead of in run-off?
Root zone pH is the environment roots actually experience, and it can differ from the feed going in or the run-off coming out. A direct reading shows the condition where nutrient uptake happens. It also skips the wait and mess of slurry or pour-through tests.
What substrates does it work in?
Bluelab lists soil, coco, potting mixes, rockwool and other substrates, as well as nutrient solution. Readings require a medium of 0.2 EC and above, which most fed substrates meet.
What is the KCl-Keep Plug?
The storage cap holds KCl storage solution that keeps the pH sensor hydrated. The KCl-Keep Plug seals that cap while you measure, which helps prevent spills and contamination of the storage solution.
